From I didn’t realise that the numbers of spirals in multi-spiral life-forms conformed to Fibonacci as well… I thought it was just the pattern. The more I think about this, the more I suspect that Phi is a simple number to represent in the Arithmetic-Logic Unit equivalent of DNA… so the representation isn’t numerical, it’s geometric or structural… so (for example) if it wants to represent the number 3… it doesn’t use “3”, it uses a triangle. Probably over-simplification… it may not use a triangle at all… it may actually use the 3 spheres stuck together forming a triangular shape… or not, but whatever – there must be something about Phi that makes it easy for DNA to represent… because it sure ain’t storing it as 1.61803398874989484820458683436563811772030917980576286213544862270526046 281890244970720720418939113748475408807538689175212663386222336931793180 060766726354433389086595939582905638322661319928290267880675208766892501 711696207032221043216269548626296313614438149758701220340805887954454749 246185695364864449241044320771344947049565846788509874339442212544877066 478091588460749988712400765217057517978834166256249407589069704000281210 427621771117778053153171410117046665991466979873176135600670874807101317 952368942752194843530567830022878569978297783478458782289110976250030269 615617002504643382437764861028383126833037242926752631165339247316711121 158818638513316203840052221657912866752946549068113171599343235973494985 090409476213222981017261070596116456299098162905552085247903524060201727 997471753427775927786256194320827505131218156285512224809394712341451702 237358057727861600868838295230459264787801788992199027077690389532196819 861514378031499741106926088674296226757560523172777520353613936 and it turns up everywhere. I’ve long harboured a suspicion that with art (and probably nature, but especially art) there’s about a 3% margin of error when it comes to things “said to conform to the Golden Mean” actually conforming… they’re close, but often fall within a 3% range rather than being spot-on. I’ve been trying to put together a new movie explaining what the calipers are for recently… and one of the things that I wanted to talk about was how the Golden Mean can be useful when forming the dimensions of the human face – because a lot of the calipers are bought by cosmetic surgeons. So… I thought I’d show the proportions on a face… Obviously I didn’t have a face to hand :), so I made one. I did this by averaging two other faces that I found on the internet (hint, one is a Brazilian Supermodel). Averaging faces is interesting…

Gorgeous deco-ey looking chest of drawers Although that last one does remind me a bit of a Guild Navigator off Dune Say what you like about that film, the sets were excellent. They had this whole art-deco thing extruded out into something entirely new. If it had had a simpler story (Dune is a very very difficult one to take on) then it could have been a new Alien (the HR Giger one). Mind you, I think Giger has had various shots at Dune stuff… eg: Not that that has anything to do with The Golden Mean mind (apart from the tank-thing’s elbow and fist being where golden mean lines cross), but you know… you can’t always talk about what you’re supposed to be talking about. Speaking of Deco – check out these Super-Hero posters re-imagined as 20th C Modern Art The golden mean only works sideways in this one……

By accident mostly :), but when it happens it happens (image available for sale at The Denver Post) This photo instantly struck me as being a bit of a classic – reminds me of 17th/18th Century Action-Painting… where people are always pointing and shouting and lying on the ground… involved in their own dramas etc. eg: All being a glorification of one of Early Rome’s least glorious incidents – when they were still a bunch of outcasts and outlaws, ande decided they needed… well… a gene-pool. So they nicked one from a neigbouring tribe. Anyway, yer grand masters painted it. Oh yes, they painted it A LOT. You get the idea though – loads of chaos, shouting, pointing, slaying, carrying off etc. Obviously the protest photo appears to be a male-only affair – which breaks the 4th wall, which as far as I’m aware, the Eurpoean Masters never did… other…

Absolutely beautiful shot from Black Death… which I saw last night :) This is the bit where God gives Osmund some seriously bad advice. The movie is beautifully shot – in Germany… but all a little too violent for my tastes. If you can deal with the medievalness of it all though, it’s a wonderful lesson in composition – how to think like a photographer rather than a film-maker.
